5 shows to watch this weekend according to an Event Manager
It’s fair to say that over the last few months many of us have come to be well acquainted with our Netflix accounts as time at home becomes suddenly abundant. From Tiger King to Ozark to The Last Dance, you may be feeling like you’ve burnt through all of the internet’s latest offerings and now find yourself unsure what to do next.
If this is you, fear not! Here, the Keito Team has compiled a list of shows to keep you busy this weekend. Not only will they will they be entertaining, exciting and funny, but they will also give you an insight into what it takes to be an Event Manager.
Now all you need is the popcorn.
1. 7 Days Out (Netflix)
What does it take to build a whole garden a week before a Chanel fashion show? How does a top New York restaurant go ahead with opening when its kitchen doesn’t have gas?
The Netflix show 7 Days Out will take you behind the scenes of some of the world’s largest events such as the Kentucky Derby, the Westminster Dog Show and even a NASA space mission. This show perfectly captures everything from the stressful build up to a major event, to the relief and jubilation that comes with pulling it off. This one is bound to make you smile.
2. First Monday in May (Google Play and YouTube Premium)
It must be every Event Managers dream to play a role in the coordination of the Met Gala. Undoubtedly the world’s most glamorous event, this documentary takes you through every little element that must be approved by Anna Wintour herself, from seating charts, to costume curation, to event styling.
If you’re like us and missed fawning over the stunning designs that would have been on display at this year’s cancelled event, maybe this documentary will satisfy your haut couture cravings.
3. Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened (Netflix)
Who could forget the infamous Fyre Festival of 2017 that saw hundreds of festival goers stranded on a remote island in the Bahamas? If ever there was example of how not to run an event, this would be it.
Released last year, the Fyre documentary is something akin to watching a car crash in slow motion, as you see everything from funding, to attendee housing, to catering, to water access go wrong. That being said, it also demonstrates just how much effort and coordination should go into organising such a large scale event.
4. Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert (YouTube)
If you chase it up now, this YouTube Original production may still be available for free on YouTube. It celebrates the cultural phenomenon that is Coachella and details exactly how the festival grew from its first iteration into the loud, colourful, multifaceted and globally popular event that it is today.
Whilst this documentary focuses more on Coachella’s music and staging developments, you’ll still get an insight into the crazy things that its organisers have had to do for the mega-stars that grace its stages. Like build a grassy mountain in just five days for Kanye West’s Sunday Service performance. The usual.
5. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)
Whilst this show doesn’t cover events exactly, it gives you a great example of the tenacity, creative thinking and resilience that every Event Manager needs when working in this industry. For the show’s main character, Kimmy, things rarely go according to plan, but she faces each new challenge with a determination to overcome, and achieve her goals.
Every new event is bound to throw a tricky curveball your way, but as an Event Manager, it is always second nature to make like Kimmy and find a way to work things out.
What do you think? Did we miss any?
